Trump Sends Border Czar Tom Homan to Minnesota as Federal Immigration Enforcement Faces Unrest

President Donald Trump has dispatched his immigration enforcement czar, Tom Homan, to Minnesota to take command of federal efforts after escalating violence and disorder linked to ongoing ICE operations in the Minneapolis area. The deployment comes amid a broad federal crackdown known as Operation Metro Surge, which has mobilized thousands of Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers and other federal personnel to target criminal illegal aliens and enforce immigration laws statewide.

Trump announced on social media that Homan — a seasoned law enforcement leader who previously served as acting director of ICE — will report directly to the president and oversee operations in the state. The president characterized Homan as “tough but fair” and reiterated his commitment to uphold law and order.

The decision follows several violent episodes during enforcement actions, including the fatal shooting of a Minneapolis resident by federal agents. These incidents have sparked fierce criticism from local officials and civil liberties advocates, who argue that the surge of federal agents has created chaos rather than security. Opponents label the presence of thousands of armed ICE agents an overreach that undermines community trust and state authority.

Minnesota’s leaders, including the state attorney general and city officials, have publicly challenged the federal narrative, questioning the tactics and transparency of ICE operations and the use of deadly force. Legal action has even been taken to argue that the massive federal deployment violates state sovereignty.

Despite the backlash, Trump and his advisers maintain that strict enforcement is necessary to confront criminal elements and uphold immigration laws. The administration insists that operations are focused on violent offenders and that federal agents are acting within legal authority. Homan’s arrival is intended to reinforce discipline and coordination amid the controversy, while the White House vows to continue its broader immigration agenda.
