Texas GOP Nominee Under Fire After Opponent Highlights Family’s Democratic Donations

In the middle of the 2026 Republican primary for Texas’ 7th Congressional District, candidate Alexander Hale says something simply doesn’t add up.

Hale is calling attention to what he describes as a troubling pattern: a long record of Democratic political donations from the family of fellow GOP contender Alexander Kalai. Federal Election Commission filings show Kalai’s father has donated significant sums over the years to prominent Democratic candidates and committees, including Beto O’Rourke, Hillary Clinton, the Democratic National Committee, and other left-leaning political organizations.

For Hale, the issue is straightforward. Republican voters deserve to know whether a candidate seeking their support truly reflects conservative values. He argues that this history raises legitimate concerns about alignment, loyalty, and political consistency — especially in a competitive primary where voters are looking for dependable leadership.

The debate also shines a spotlight on Texas’ open primary system. In Texas, voters are not required to register by party, meaning anyone can vote in either primary. Critics argue this system can blur ideological lines and potentially allow outside influence in Republican contests.

Kalai’s campaign maintains that he supports core Republican priorities, including school choice, protecting girls’ sports, deregulation, and economic growth. Supporters argue that a candidate should be judged by his own positions and record.

Still, Hale insists Republican voters should take a hard look at the full picture before heading to the ballot box.

As the primary approaches, the race is becoming not just a contest between two candidates, but a broader conversation about party identity, accountability, and the direction of conservative leadership in Texas.
