Texas Voters Send a Message: America First Conservative Don Huffines Wins GOP Primary

Texas voters made their voices heard in the Republican primary for state comptroller, handing a decisive victory to former state senator, businessman and conservative Champion Don Huffines. In a competitive statewide race, Huffines defeated acting Comptroller Kelly Hancock and Railroad Commissioner Christi Craddick to become the Republican nominee for the powerful financial oversight position.

The comptroller serves as Texas’ chief financial officer, overseeing tax collection, state contracts, and revenue estimates that shape the state budget. It’s a critical role that influences how taxpayer dollars are managed and how responsibly government operates.

Huffines’ victory represents a significant moment for grassroots conservatives. Known for his outspoken support of limited government, lower taxes, and strong border enforcement, Huffines built his campaign around themes familiar to the America First movement: fiscal responsibility, fighting government waste, and pushing back against progressive policies.

The race also drew attention because it featured a sitting acting comptroller backed by powerful political allies. Despite that support, Republican voters ultimately chose the outsider-style candidate who ran on a message of independence and reform.

Huffines has long been a recognizable figure in Texas conservative politics. During his time in the Texas Senate, he built a reputation for pushing aggressive tax relief and challenging the status quo in Austin. His campaign message emphasized rooting out government waste and protecting taxpayer money.

With the primary behind him, Huffines now moves on to face Democratic state senator Sarah Eckhardt in the November general election.

For many conservatives across Texas and the country, the primary result is being viewed as another sign that voters remain energized by candidates who speak plainly about protecting freedom, defending traditional values, and putting American taxpayers first.

If the primary results are any indication, the grassroots conservative movement in Texas remains strong, and determined to keep the America First agenda alive and well.
