Meta to reinstate Trump's Facebook, Instagram accounts

Social media giant Meta announced Wednesday that it would reinstate former President Donald Trump's accounts on both Facebook and Instagram.

The former president was suspended from both platforms in the aftermath of the Jan. 6, 2022, Capitol Riot. Other social media platforms such as Twitter acted likewise, prompting Trump to create Truth Social, a digital platform similar to Twitter that practiced looser content moderation than its competitors.

Meta President of Global Affairs Nick Clegg declared that the reinstatements would come "in the coming weeks," according to NBC News. He also stated that the company would impose more stringent moderation guidelines on repeat offenders such as "heightened penalties for repeat offenses — penalties which will apply to other public figures whose accounts are reinstated from suspensions related to civil unrest under our updated protocol."
