While Everyone Argued About A Restaurant, Obama Did Three States In Six Days

Barack Obama spent the last week doing something worth watching closely, and almost none of the coverage noticed because it was busy with a joke about interior decorating.

Saturday he was in Detroit, campaigning with Abdul El-Sayed, the Democratic Senate nominee in Michigan.

Then Ohio, appearing with Sherrod Brown and gubernatorial candidate Amy Acton.

Wednesday, Georgia, for Jon Ossoff and Keisha Lance Bottoms.

Three states. Six days. The most recognizable Democrat alive, deployed to precisely the places where control of the Senate will be decided.

You do not send your closer unless the game is close.

Michigan is the race that determines whether Democrats need five more Republican seats or just one. Ohio is a coin flip in a state the President carried by more than eleven points two years ago. Georgia sits on every list of seats that could change hands.

Obama went to all three inside a week.

And he did it standing next to El-Sayed, a candidate who has spent years publicly criticizing Obama's own record. Asked about it on Meet the Press, El-Sayed said he knows Obama was handed a difficult set of circumstances and did his best.

Translation: we will sort out our disagreements in January. There is an election Tuesday.

That is what a serious closing operation looks like, and conservatives should study it rather than mock it.

Now the part that is being covered instead.

Obama said in Ohio last weekend that the White House renovations have the building looking like Saddam Hussein opened a Cheesecake Factory.

The response was substantial. The President addressed it at a rally in Mississippi. The White House posted a mock Cheesecake Factory menu on X listing administration accomplishments. Conservative commentators spent several days arguing the remark proved Obama is out of touch.

Then on Wednesday in Georgia, Obama pocketed all of it.

They mobilized a whole-of-government response to that joke, he said. Not to inflation. To the joke.

He went on to make the actual point, which was never about decor. Prices have risen enough that a lot of families can barely afford to eat out at all, and he suggested an administration might spend its time on that instead.

Understand what just happened there.

That was not an unforced error by a former president who could not help himself.

That was bait, and it worked exactly as designed. He made a joke engineered to be irresistible, the response became the story, and then he used the response to deliver a message about grocery and restaurant prices in the final week of an election where affordability is the dominant issue.

The coverage has been about a restaurant chain for four days.

Meanwhile he was in Detroit, Columbus and Atlanta.

Conservatives are entitled to find the joke obnoxious. What we are not entitled to do is spend the closing week of a midterm election relitigating a punchline while the other side runs a ground operation through three toss-up states.

The number that matters more than any of this.

The final NPR, PBS News and Marist survey found that roughly one in five likely voters have already cast a ballot.

That group broke for Democrats 68 to 31.

More than two-thirds of the votes already locked in, counted, and permanently beyond anyone's reach went the other way.

That is not a projection or a model. Those ballots exist.

And here is the genuine good news, which is also real.

The national environment has improved for Republicans in every single measurement for a year.

Marist had Democrats up 14 last November. Twelve in September. Ten among registered voters this month. Eight among likely voters.

Fourteen, twelve, ten, eight.

The tighter the likely voter screen gets, the better our position becomes. NPR's own analysis described caution signs and said the wave could be limited. The Senate is still rated a toss-up by most handicappers.

Voters have been moving our direction all year. That movement is documented and it is substantial.

It simply does not count until somebody votes.

Five days.

Early voting closes this week in most states. If yours is still open, go today rather than Friday.

If a mail ballot is on your counter, fill it out and return it now. Follow the signature and identification instructions exactly, because most rejected ballots die over envelope defects and curing one requires noticing before a deadline you probably do not know.

Then take three conservatives who vote irregularly and make them your project between now and Tuesday. Not persuasion. Logistics. Dates, locations, rides.

Obama is 65 years old and out of office, and he got on a plane three times in six days because he understands that elections are decided by who shows up.

The other side sent their closer to Michigan, Ohio and Georgia.

Ours is whoever reads this and picks up a phone.
