“Conformity,” John F. Kennedy told the UN in his address before the General Assembly in September of 1961, “is the jailer of freedom.”
And that stark warning is just as foreboding and forbidding in the Washington swamp today as it was on the world stage more than six decades ago.
That is why the recent efforts of top Trump advisors to hold hands with the radical leftwing mainstream media and conform to failed past efforts to cozy up and make nice are so absolutely appalling.
Make no mistake: Trump had the “Fake News” mainstream media on the ropes.
Liberal network viewership was plunging.
The top Trump-hating anchors were facing pay cuts.
And in danger of losing their lucrative jobs.
Then a gaggle of the President’s top advisors came to the lickspittle network media’s rescue.
And bailed out his – and our -- worst enemies.
The proof is in the sordid pudding:
- Trump’s top PR advisors told him to invite Trump-hating Morning Joe and Mika to Mar-A-Lago to break bread and make peace. They were on the verge of being terminated. Now they are back in the driver’s seat attacking the President on a daily basis.
- Trump’s PR advisors told him to go on “Meet the Press” with the clearly deranged Kristen Welker – who then savaged the President repeatedly throughout the entire interview. Rumors had been swirling around Washington that, with her ratings plummeting, the wild-eyed Welker was about to be fired. Trump’s advisors salvaged her job.
Why, you might rightly ask, would Trump’s own advisors team up with those in the radical leftists in the mainstream media who hate him most?
Well, I can tell you as a longtime political operative that in Washington, it is all about the power – and the money.
Political positions are temporal. And the pay is limited. Sometimes fairly high But never exorbitant or astronomical.
Not so positions on the air at any major network.
Which is why a political position – no matter how lofty – is almost inevitably just a stepping stone to becoming a talking head (either fulltime or as a “contributor”) on one of the major networks.
Just ask Dana Perino, Nicolle Wallace, Kellyanne Conway, Jen Pasaki, Karen Finney, or George Stephanopoulos.
In short, to many (yes, perhaps most) Washington political appointees, a high-level job is not a lofty goal in an of itself. A chance to serve their country and further the cause may sound nice to the unwashed. But, frankly, for the political elite, who really cares?
It is simply one more step along the road to political power and personal gain.
And, simply put, if you want to make the big time on the small screen, you have to get along to go along…
No matter the cost to your boss.
And then, once in power, you get the Deep State’s marching orders. And the circle is complete.
