Trump says Ohio auto plant needs to reopen, even if GM has to sell it

President Trump warned General Motors that “time is of the essence” to reopen a plant in Ohio that closed earlier this month, citing the strong economy and competition from companies like Toyota.

“Because the economy is so good, General Motors must get their Lordstown, Ohio, plant open, maybe in a different form or with a new owner, FAST!” Trump tweeted Saturday. “Toyota is investing 13.5 $Billion in U.S., others likewise. G.M. MUST ACT QUICKLY. Time is of the essence!”

General Motors eliminated 1,700 jobs at the assembly plant when it closed earlier this month but hasn’t signaled if the plant will permanently shut down. Rather, the plant is in a “state of readiness” while contract negotiations continue throughout the year.

But according to Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine, it’s not likely that GM will revitalize the plant by bringing in a new line of vehicles. DeWine said the company has kept him in the dark about what its plans may be but could notify him within four to six weeks.

“My focus is to do everything to get jobs back in that plant, understanding that our hands are really tied until there is some movement from General Motors,” DeWine told the Associated Press Tuesday.
