July 30, 2015—”If they fly over my house, they better beware, because I’ve got a shotgun,” Kentucky Senator Rand Paul said about drones in a Snapchat interview earlier this year. But it was a different Kentuckian who actually carried out that very act, and he is now facing multiple felonies.

In the small town of Hillview, Kentucky, a drone hovered over the home of William H. Merideth while his teen daughters basked in the sun in the backyard. Merideth waited for the drone to fly away, but when it didn’t, he went and got his shotgun.

Four men came to Merideth’s home upset about their downed drone, but Merideth made it clear to them he’d defend his property if they came closer. From WPTV:

“The police were called and that’s when Merideth was arrested with wanton endangerment and criminal mischief. It is against the law to discharge a firearm, within city limits, according to a Hillview ordinance, unless you are a law enforcement officer or the action is in self defense.
